At an early age, Sherman received Christ and was baptized at Rice Memorial Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Parkview High School, where he was an active member of the basketball team under the direction of Coach Ripley. He later served three years in the Army National Guard.

Sherman continued his education at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, majoring in Business Administration with a minor in Accounting from 1981–1985.

He began his professional career with Textron Financial, where he was awarded “Employee of the Year” in 2022 and later became Senior Sales Manager and National Sales Director. Sherman later worked with Signet Six Network Sciences as Marketing Director before pursuing a career with Primerica Financial Services as Regional Vice President. He also worked with Sara Lee Corporation as a Quality Assurance Technician and later ventured to Ferrellgas, Inc. as an Internal Audit Accountant.
